Obama Commencement Address at Morehouse Turns Into Controversy While Sunday will mark the first time an African-American president will deliver the commencement college address to a graduating class of all male African-Americans, one alumni of Morehouse felt compelled to pen an scathing editorial about the president for to those “too’ taken in by the symbolic meaning of it all. Writing in the Philadelphia Tribune earlier in April, Pastor Kevin Johnson from Philadelphia didn’t hold anything back in a piece entitled, “A President for Everyone, Except for Black People.” The op-ed compared the number of African Americans who hold senior positions in Obama’s cabinet with earlier administrations and found the result unacceptable.  Two of the cabinet’s four African Americans and both of its Hispanic members from Obama’s first term have announced they are leaving. Only one of the two Asian Americans who served during the first Obama term remains.

Is the Government Spying on Reporters More Often Than We Think? By Julian Sanchez  There's evidence that the Justice Department's seizure of Associated Press phone records is far from unprecedented. The Justice Department's rules only say the media must be informed about "subpoenas" for "telephone toll records." The FBI's operations guidelines interprets those rules quite literally, making clear the requirement "concerns only grand jury subpoenas." That is, these rules don't apply to National Security Letters, which are secret demands for information used by the FBI that don't require judicial approval. The narrow FBI interpretation also doesn't cover administrative subpoenas, which are issued by federal agencies without prior judicial review.

Rough times for Obama? Sure. But Nixonian? Please. By Matthew DallekThe White House deserves some of the blame for the mess it’s in, but let’s be clear: The comparisons to Nixon are hyperbolic. Watergate, with its unique depth of criminality, remains a scandal unlike any other in modern times, and the echoes today reveal far more about the culture of Washington than about the supposed similarity between Obama’s troubles and Nixon’s crimes.

Abuses of power Colbert I. King Justice Dept. and IRS misdeeds are disturbing reminders of secret police.he Justice Department sought to discover who in the U.S. government allegedly told the Associated Press about a failed al-Qaeda plot in Yemen. The compromised Yemeni operation differs from some breakdowns in national security for its cause. Chalk up that serious breach to hubris: the leaker’s puerile chest-thumping about having bested a sworn enemy or, worse, a self-serving desire to burnish the Obama administration’s credentials as an al-Qaeda slayer. In this regard, the administration has only itself to blame.

Uncertainty of the American dream In the US, each generation is meant to be better off than the last – but three in four Americans expect the opposite for their own children. The American Dream has suffered a wake-up call. The stock market may be rising across the pond, but so is consumer unease. The majority of Americans think the country's best days are behind them, and three-quarters of workers think their children will find succeeding in the US harder than they did.
